Service Learning: College Students Teach 8th Graders About Cells
College Biology students had the opportunity to teach 8th graders from the Cottage Grove Middle School AVID program about cells. Middle School visited my Exploring Biology Course at Inver Hills Community College in Fall of 2013. My students had prepared household materials to create plant and animal cell models with the middle school students. As they created together, my students described the function of each cell organelle. Students also had the opportunity to see cells and cell organelles under the microscope, even from their own cheek cells! This activity was mutually beneficial for all. The middle school students learned a great deal about college and about biology. Because teaching is one of the best ways to learn, this experience was exceptionally valuable to my students.
